This year, organizations and residents across Orange County are coming together to demand a People’s Budget OC—a budget by and for the people.
The People’s Budget OC Coalition is fighting for a better Orange County: a more vibrant and humane place to live in which every community member has full access to housing, health and mental health care; where our children and youth, our environment, and racial justice are top priorities; and where people have freedom from policing and jails. To make this future a reality, we are raising public awareness about Orange County’s almost $1 billion discretionary budget fund, which the OC Board of Supervisors controls and sets priorities for. Historically, the Supervisor's budget decisions prioritize “public protection” – that is, law enforcement, jails, and the court system -- over real community investments.
We know that Orange County can be a place where every community member can live in dignity and thrive if we invest in our people instead of social control. We are organizing individuals and groups to create a people’s budget that invests in the health, well-being, and freedom of every community member. Our coalition includes organizations fighting for: affordable and supportive housing to prevent and end homelessness, racial justice, divestment from policing and jails, investment in restorative practices, the right to protest, economic justice, healthcare access, and healthy and safe communities, among others.
Join our movement to demand a People’s Budget that works for everyone! We plan to keep the movement alive beyond this year’s OC budget, and will not let up until we have a budget by and for the people!
